In May every year, Dying Matters hosts a week of events to raise awareness of the importance of talking about dying, death and bereavement. In recent years, Dying Matters Awareness Week has challenged us all to answer a question: What Can You Do? How can we help ourselves, or families and our communities face up to death and bereavement? For 2019, they are asking another question: Are We Ready? It’s a question that challenges each of us. Are We Ready for our own deaths, or the deaths of those we care about? For many of us, the answer will not be ‘yes’

You may not be ready now but there is never a better time than now to start thinking about some of these questions. At some point in our lives most of us will have to arrange a funeral and one day we will all have our own funeral. One of the decisions you will have to make when arranging a funeral will be about the coffin, but have you ever thought about what coffin you would want? What design would you have if anything was possible?

So for this year’s Dying Matters Awareness week Ecoffins are having a Design a coffin competition. We’ve provided a template you can download (click on the picture on the left) and you can produce your design in any way you wish – it could be a drawing, painting, collage or a photograph. It’s your coffin so you can have whatever you like but your design should preferably fit into the template. This competition is meant to be a bit of fun (plus you could win yourself some vouchers) but what we really want for you to consider: Are you ready to start having a conversation about death and dying? If you can imagine a coffin for yourself then maybe you are.
